Our Blessed Mother

Devotion to the Holy Virgin Mary has always been a special characteristic of the sons and daughters of Saint Francis. The entire Franciscan Order has been placed under the protection of Mary Immaculate.

Our Sisters regard the Blessed Virgin as their mother and model and pray to her every day.

  • We meditate upon the mysteries of the lives of Jesus and Mary in the daily praying of the Rosary.
  • On Saturdays we pray the Franciscan Crown, which is a rosary meditating on the Seven Joys of Mary.
  • Three times a day we pray the Angelus. (During Easter we pray the Regina Caeli)
  • We have special devotions to Our Lady during the months of May and October.

How to pray the Franciscan Crown

The Seven Joys of the Blessed Mother

There are no introductory prayers to the Franciscan Crown. One begins with the first decade, saying one Our Father, followed by ten Hail Marys and a Glory Be. On each successive decade continue in the same manner.

Each decade is said in honor of one of the seven joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary:

  • Annunciation
  • Visitation
  • Birth of our Lord
  • Adoration of the Magi
  • Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple
  • Beholding of Christ on Easter Morning
  • Assumption and Coronation

When you have completed all seven decades, add two more Hail Marys which makes a total of 72, commemorating the number of years for the earthly life of our Blessed Mother. The Crown is completed by saying an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be for the intentions of the Holy Father and to gain the indulgences applicable.

St. Francis’ Salutation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Hail, holy Lady, most holy Queen, Mary, Mother of God, ever Virgin;

Chosen by the most holy Father in heaven, consecrated by Him, with His most holy beloved Son and the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.

On you descended and in you still remains all the fullness of grace and ever good.

Hail His Palace.
Hail His Tabernacle.
Hail His Robe.
Hail His Handmaid.
Hail His Mother.

And hail, all holy Virtues, who, by the grace and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, are poured into the hearts of the faithful, so that, faithless no longer, they may be made faithful servants of God through you. Amen.
